The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has donated relief materials to the Nigerian Correctional Service, Rivers State Command, as part of a humanitarian intervention aimed at easing the effects of economic hardship on inmates across custodial centres in the state. The donation was presented Saturday in Port Harcourt on behalf of NDDC Managing Director Dr. Samuel Ogbuku by the Commission's Director of Social Services, Jeremiah Oritsejolone, who described the gesture as consistent with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda and the NDDC's broader people-oriented programming. Oritsejolone said the intervention reflected the Commission's commitment to supporting vulnerable groups and institutions across the Niger Delta region, noting that officers, staff and inmates alike would benefit from the gesture. "This gesture demonstrates that the NDDC understands the importance of caring for the less privileged in society," he said, adding an assurance that the materials would be distributed equitably across all custodial centres in the state. He characterized inmates as members of society who would eventually reintegrate into their communities, arguing it was important to support their welfare in the meantime. Rivers State SDG Coordinator Ambassador Ipalibo Madodoye commended the initiative, saying it aligns with several UN Sustainable Development Goals, including those focused on quality education, gender equality and inclusion, and peace, justice and strong institutions. He noted that the NDDC has extended similar relief this year to communities affected by flooding and environmental degradation across the region, and said the SDG Office would continue partnering with the Commission on programmes benefiting women, youth and persons with disabilities. Engr. Okezie Ule, Director of the NDDC's Rivers State Office, described the donation as recognition of the Correctional Service's role in maintaining peace, security and law and order in the state.
